After a few days with the 100mm f2.8 macro I have found out that trying to use the lens on a tripod/monpod via the camera makes the lens very unbalanced.
The Canon tripod ring (B) is around £100 but I see that there are Chinese clones for a fraction of this price - has anyone used one and are they ok? |

I've been using this lens for the past few years and never ever found the need for a tripod collar, even with a full set of tubes + my twin lite MR-14EX, macro flash fitted

I find it ok (ish) on the tripod but it feels really unbalanced on a monopod which is my preferred support when out in the field trying to shot butterflies and Dragonflies.

Thanks Roy that is a good price a lot, lot cheaper then Canons. I have also been looking around for a cheaper lens hood, rather then Canons own which are not cheap. I have put a UV filter on for the moment until I can get a cheap hood.

I may be a bit late on this one, but have you thought of Hama rubber screw in lens hoods. Don |

could not the camera be mounted on the tripod, using the cameras own screw in fixture,ie attaching the tripod mounting plate to the camera as opposed to mounting the lens.

Yes it can Christine and I am currently using this method but it is not ideal - this is a heavy(ish) lens and the point of balance is not right if you mount it via the camera.
