I bought a 4GB San Disk SD card for my D80 this morning. It works fine in the camera but the computer won't read it; I have tried it in two computers both with a card reader and plugged directly into the computers but they don't want to know. However, plugging the camera into either computer works fine. Why is this? It's annoying.

I had a similar problem as you about 1 month ago, Somehow the card had corrupted and would not allow the computer to read it through my card reader, simple answer try using recovery soft ware, I did this and with 163 shots on the card I recovered 202 photos. San Disk produce their own software. "Photo recovery Pro

If it is a 4GB card, then it can't be an SD card as they have a maximum capacity of 2GB. If it's 4GB then its an SDHC card, a Secure Digital High Capacity card. Your D80 appears to be fully compatible with the SDHC format, but your card readers do not appear to be capable of reading this format of card.
Everything you ever wanted to know about SDHC can be read here: http://www.sandisk.com/Assets/File/pdf/retail/SDHC1.pdf Ensure that you have a reader on your PC that can read the SDHC format. Hope this helps. Duncan |

Hi Duncan. Of course, yes it's an SDHC card. The computer can read it via the camera but not directly via my existing card readers. Well, at least the card itself is not faulty, which is a relief.
I'll get myself a new card reader at some point. Many thanks VB

Use a good card reader like Sandisk. Probably you'll be out of this trauma.

Yes, this is an SDHC card and a new reader will solve the problem. However, Duncan, there are 4Gb SD cards. I have both SD and SDHC 4Gb cards from MyMemory and the 4Gb SD work well in older readers.

Yes, I was aware of such cards, but they are not (strictly speaking) SD cards. Refer the 4th paragraph of the pdf file I linked to above. Use at your own risk. Duncan |
