Hello members!!
Now we have an ultra zoom lens camera point & shot. No only that large lens but wide angle at once. I talk about P & S cameras with 24X or 26X zoom (DSLR equivalent above 600 mm, and wide angle 26 mm). But what about the quality of the pictures in comparition with DSLR? |

I am sure that if they were up to DSLR standards then people would be switching in their thousands. One thing that I have gathered from reading posts on the subject is that the P & S cameras are nowhere near as good with regards to noise at higher ISO's - I recently read a good photographers review of a top of the range P & S any he reckons it is almost unusable above ISO 200.
That's not to say that they are not useful as a walkabout when a DSLR is too much bulk to cart around. |

Thanks Roy and Yelver. My problem is the heavy and bulky DSLR, because when I am birding I carry another items.

I use a Panasonic FZ28 18x zoom at 10mp, 32.1x zoom at 3mp. Good O.I.S. but even better results using a tripod, when shore-side. I've had some good pics taken in some 'tricky' environments i.e. a Rolling & pitching ship in heavy weather & pleased with all results. I find this more usable where I 'operate' as I have to hang on with one hand in some cases!! I haven't even started on the manual controls yet, just auto, I should try harder?

My wife has had good results with a Panasonic FZ8 (she's also a birder who doesn't want to lug a DSLR around). It's got a good zoom; it's great for close-ups of dragonflies; and image stabilisation means good digiscoping results.
