Default The History of the Buttermere Tree

Was up in the Lake District earlier this week staying with my brother Ade G and on a misty day went and took the obligatory photos of the Butteremere tree. In the evening we were discussing how it must be one of the most photographed trees in the area and a rummage on Google brought up hundreds of images but disappointingly the tree hasn’t always been so spartan. We could only draw the conclusion that irresponsible photographers have vandalized this tree over the few years 'to improve the composition'!!!

So going back in time we have this shot - 2015 by me

After mentioning vandalism by photographers it occurred to me it could have been by people lighting fires (looking for wood) nearby as well. In either event it is out of order. Also a little surprising considering it is only a 5min walk from the car park and pubs so someone causing damage would risk being seen or challenged. A shame as there was nothing wrong with the way it looked in 2001
