One taken just before total eclipse
400 ISO f8 1.3 sec After a while I took my last good AF and then switched lens to manual to prevent it from hunting all over the place. I was surprised that you could get a light reading from the moon. At one point I had f8 @ 20 seconds but too much movement. Nothing in our solar system then Don ? I can't wait to see what Dave Smith managed tonight.

Well done on the tracking front Rob. I did not think of going as low as a second to make up for f5.6 lens and poor high noise performance. So I gave it a go and here is the result.

Sorry Rob, you will have to wait for the next total eclipse before I can oblige. It was a total disaster for me, which started two days ago when I realised that I had booked to go to the theatre. Well never mind I thought, I should still get back before totality starts. Well the play went on longer and so by the time I got home totality was well underway. In my panic to get set up two things happened, somehow the iso setting on my camera had changed to 1600 and so with the long exposures the noise or grainyness was unacceptable and to cap that because I was in a semi-panic the focus wasn't that good. Also I was using a driven mount and forgot to line up with the pole star, and then set the altitude angle incorrectly. The images looked fine on the camera but when I came in and put them on the computer the disaster made itself known. When will I learn to take things methodically and calmly!
Well I have learned a few lessons tonight. I am however very pleased to see so many of you having a go and with success. Brilliant, well done. I will now climb back in my hole. Dave |

This is probably my best shot after noise reduction in photoshop. The tracking error is evident in the two stars

Thats really bad luck Dave, I am so sorry for you.
I was only saved by Robs tracking post. I tried HI-1 which gave pretty grim results so was just going to settle with the small red dot that the 105 gave me. We both really enjoyed the views through the scope which was much clearer than the pic. So well done for keeping us advised of the event, and better luck with the next event whatever that may be. I tried again later on last night around 11pm,and I noticed a big reduction in brightness but a lovely colour. It was well worth the wait with a very low keeper rate, and a lot of trial and error with shutter, iso and exposure.

I was doing test exposures on and old 128mb card and viewing on the pc. Main pics were then taken using my microdrive. I have yet to download that lot to the pc.
I think I need another spare larger capacity card. Each compressed NEF is around 11mb. Don |
