Camera Insurance

Can anyone advise me on a good Camera Insurance company to use please.

Hi Maximize....I recently bought a D50 from Jessops & they tried to sell me their insurance / extra warranty that worked out about £10 per £100 value. I then rang our home contents insurance company, the NFU; I totalled up about £900 worth of photographic gear & they said it would be an extra £4.76 per year on my existing insurance!
I know it's not quite the same cover as the Jessops offer but it's a hell of a lot cheaper!

I urge you to find out if this is 'all risk' insurance, will the equipment be covered if in a vehicle in transit or in a vehicle parked on private land?

Depending on the value of the equipment you need to insure, it may be worth simply extending your home contents insurance to cover it, though you must have it all risks. However some companies have a limit to the value of any single item.

It may be then worth looking into separate equiment insurance, esp if you earn money from your photography. Last year I paid £231. for equipment to the value of £12000

This was through a photo insurance specialist broker in Colchester, called Glover Howe and was significantly cheaper than through the companies advertising in the popular press/magazines.

Many years ago I dropped a Nikon F90x and macro lens into a silty New Forest stream. The camera was a write off, and the lens required expensive cleaning. I wrote to Amateur Photographer magazine, and they advised specialist insurance, mentioning some names. I worked out that the cost of insuring my cameras for the preceding 10 years equated to the replacement cost several times over. So much for AP and their rubbish advice.

Anyway, Bird Forum has a forum dedicated to insurance. You might find it useful. I'm surprised some of the WPF luminaries have not pointed you in that direction.

I would suggest then you get a quote from3 different people. E & I are one of the big photo insurance companies, I found them much more expensive.

Do you have home contents insurance already? It is usually far more cost effective to extend your contents insurance to cover any specialist items. If your current contents insurer's won't do this, then change to a company that will.

I now use photoguard, this is 'all risk' insurance. Cover includes among other situations, equipment in transit, whilst in a parked vehicle (private or public land) accidental damage and theft. Photoguard allow tailored insurance so if you dont want overseas cover then it can be removed from the policy to trim the price. To cover equipment in transit items must be in a hard case but I negotiated transit in one of two lowepro photo rucksacks.

Its always a good idea to shop around but photoguard offer a guarantee that you will not find the same cover at a lower price.

Even though I am insured I still take every precaution such as taking my kit with me when I stop at service stations and other high risk areas.
