Behind the Scenes
  • Lighting conditions are always difficult when shooting against the sky so this image started out at a 3 shot bracket.
  • These were then exported from Lightroom using > Edit in > Merge to HDR Pro in Photoshop... to create a 32 bit tiff.
  • This was then reimported into Lightroom for tonal editing. See this <<<Youtube Tutorial>>> for full detail of the process.
  • Then the image was exported to Photoshop as an 8 bit image so that I could clone out some fairy lights & convert to B&W using Silver Efex Pro

Ups & Downs

My Up is Ade's - Whitehaven Candlestick. An interesting bit of stonework & certainly fits the bill as far as the challenge is concerned. For me, its a little bit too central in the frame - maybe moving a bit to the left to show more of the left pier wall with the candlestick offset to the right might have made a more interesting image. Also, personally, I like my black & white images to be a bit more contrasty. There are many different ways of creating mono images - some of which give more control than others.

My Down is Graham's - Beneath the Crooked Spire. Again a very interesting subject. Personally I'me not sure about the angle/perspective. I'm also left a bit wondering if I'm supposed to be looking at the spire as suggested by the title, or the huge stained glass window & surrounding stonework, which dominate the image.

As always Guys, JMHO
