Its an OK all rounder for about £550 (Amazon.co.uk or Warehouse Express.com) but suffers from distortion at the wide end. I found the image quality on a par with the 18x55 kit lens. It will work well on your 550D.

Have you considered the 18x200? The price ....£403 I found on Amazon.co.uk. The image quality is good. the IS is spot on and the extra stretch useful. One problem is that when you throw it over your shoulder the lens can self extend. Annoying but not the end of the world.

Using the 1:6 crop factor of the 550D you'll have a lens that actually works at 28x320mm - for a cheaper price.

Dispute having 5 lenses in my kit bag (12-22, 24-70, 24-105, 70-200, 70-300) for the last two years I've hired one of these as a walk about lens (no e ) to take abroad on holiday & got great results with it. For me the extra 3 mm at the wide end over the 18-200.

Look at these reviews <<<15-85>>> and <<<18-200>>> and you'll see that the 15-85 is both sharper and suffers less distortion wide open

Both have IS & I couldn't live with the softness of the longer lens

As always JMHO
