Default Best lense for nikon d5100?

Just purchased the above with the kit lense, however I'd really like to squeaze as much as I can out of the cameras sensor and upgrade to a better quality lense. So far been looking into the nikon 16-85mm f3.5, the reviews seem happy enough with it but the sigma 17-50 f2.8 looks as though it might just have the edge as far as image resolution is concerned but read somewhere the build quality is somewhat compromised and suffers from distortions?

Really only interested in the general zoom range as above so if anyone has any experiance with the above I'd be interested!

Matt

Hi Matt

Im in a similar boat. I was speaking to a camera specialist and he said to be careful with Sigma lenses for some Nikons as the 105mm doesnt seem to work too well. Its something to do with Nikons unhelpful nature and them not wanting to share info with the rest of the industry. This might be fluff but he seemed genuine and some research i have done online seems to agree with this.

Just a friendly heads up.

He there Matt - when I was using DX format Nikons - D300, 200 etc, I found that the most useful lens was the 18- 200 Nikkor. It was almost permanent on my D300 and I used the D200 for special stuff - Micro lens or ultra wide angle etc..
