If the choice is between DSLR and compact - don't hesitate, take a slr-camera, you won't regret!

I have been using Canon D400 for some time now and must say it is a decent entry level camera.

I ended up buying the Canon 450d. ITs an awsome 12.3 megapixel dslr.

The 450d replaced my 300d and it was a huge step up. The picture quality is amazing and the camera is easy as hell to use. I would call this a beginner to intermediate camera. This camera has all types automatic settings. Although your not supose to use the automatice setting on a dslr because they limit you to what you can do they provide a great learning tool. When you feel ready start using the manual modes. You'll be impressed. When you figure out what you prefer to photograph, whether it be landscapes, macro, action, long exposure etc, Ill help you with lenses and other gadgets that might help.

The Fujifilm S5600, available widely, has plenty of megapixels and a built in 10x optical zoom, plus the ability to shoot in different grades and formats. It can be fully automatic or give you plenty of flexible options to emperiment and learn with. Teleconverters are available to bump that up to 15x optical zoom.
