Worthwhile Tool, or just a bit of fun?

Downloaded PixelBender for CS5 today and have been playing with some of the filters. I wondered if these things actually have artistic merit, or were basically just for fun (which is ok by me, really, just wondered about others' thoughts)?

Looks quite effective on the tractor shot. But like most of these artistic tools you can play them to death and becomes a style that bores very quickly.

Yes, that's a feeling I am getting. I think it also depends on you choice of picture...some are just made into curios, others can be made very effective with this.
I bet some clients would pay for something like this, though...Thanks for your input.

Agree with Rob. In the old days there were certain filters used at the time of taking which became the 'in thing' and were done to death and then thankfully disappeared to the bottom of the camera bag never to be used again. Tobacco Grad anybody?

Filters go in and out of fashion but quality photographs last forever. Phil.

My initial reaction is yes it's different and adds to the photograph. Experience tells me interest will be short lived as with HDR around four years ago.

Personally I think things like this have their place. The samples you provided are pleasant enough. I especially like the tractor and the train shots....would make great enlarged prints.

Yes. But people are still doing HDR...I think the initial reaction is to flog it to death, and then once the fire has died down, use it occasionally when it reall works.
