Default Nikon D300s multiple exposures?

I've been reading the online user manual for the D300s and see it is capable of talking a picture made up of between 2 and 10 exposures, my question is is this like an in camera HDR mode without the need for expensive a dedicated HDR software program? ....or have I got my wires crossed!!!

btw I don't yet own the above camera but thinking about buying one!!

Matt

There's a question, and finding an answer to it has nearly blown my mind.

Not having that feature on Stevie's D300 I had to download a manual for the 300s. Reading pages 184 to 188 ( Multiple Exposures ) suggested possibly, as you can set a gain between exposures and it creates a separate image combining all those frames. However I think you would need to know the start and end exposure in terms of EV difference to do that calculation, and not sure I understand how the camera would automatically determine the start point anyway. Add to that Nikon has the option of 'D-light' to bring out detail in shadows so I now started to doubt that this would be an easy HDR solution as I am sure 'D-light' would be closer even though I never use it.

Of the D300s reviews the one that shows the effect of 'D-light' the best is this one.

A further net search of 'D300s multiple exposure' looking specifically for HDR references gave an appropriate answer in this link.

Next up I found a You Tube video ' In camera HDR tutorial ' that follows the logic in the previous links answer.

I hope that is of some help.

Wow, thanks for all that Don!!

Sounds like it would be quicker and easier just to go down the Photomatix route!!

I,m not a fan off HDR because it is very often too unnatural for me. So I use the multiple exposure on my D300 and it works well It gives the details in dark zones without getting a unnatural pic. But you 've got to xperment a litlle with the EV +and - to get the result you want ,I've got time so no problem and it is nice to do!
