Default what is the Best DPI for printing

What are the best dpi for printing the default for a photo is 240 dpi which gives a 14" x 9" print thats without any crop in CS2. I have looked through my printer manual and it doesn't say I have the epson R300.

I tend to favour 300dpi set in CS when printing - I then set the image size to A4 or crop to that size.
