For posting on web, no point in having image wider than 1024 or deeper than 768, so move 1 is to use menu (Photoshop/Elements 4) Image>image size, then enter those nos in the pixel dimensions boxes that come up.
Then from menu File>Save as. You will find a quality slider and set to 6 or 7, you should find at the bottom of the dialogue box the resulting size in kb/time to display at various modem speeds. For this forum get that to below 300, but depending on how much colour+detail is in the image, you may get away with 150kb ± If you are using different software, look for equivalent moves & don't forget to modify file name so you don't over-write your original. Look forward to seeing them! Don't be afraid to ask again if still no success. |

To put a different slant on what Chris has said.
Factors that affect the kilobyte file size. 1) The number of pixels in the image. 2) The amount of compression. Two factors control how much an image will compress by. The first is the amount of fine detailed subject matter. A shot with a blurred background will compress better than a shot with loads of blades of grass for the background. Secondly is the amount of digital noise. Think of it as unwanted fine detail. 3) Use Noise reduction software or shoot at a lower ISO setting. Using the above information it should be possible to get a very high percentage of your images under the 300Kb barrier with good image quaility and of viewable size.
