Clive: You described it very well. Manual focus and sport action are not a friendly combination and though I must admit that by no means I am faster than AF or possibly as accurate, I am surely more comfortable to go manual due to the fact that I know my own limitations but hard to deal with logic of camera and lens even in servo AI. In doing so, the only trick is to have a zone of focus set first (Utilizing the Live View and 10x magnification for precise focusing- My Sony camera has let me to custom design one bottom, near shutter release, for this exact purpose) and then wait for the action to get there. I add a tiny move of lens toward infinity, if subject going away or vice versa, also as the movement is happening. That is all to it, as far as my secret goes.
