Default Format change

Is it possable to change a file from tif to jpeg, and if so how?

If the Tiff is 16 bit, you must first convert it to 8 bits, to do this in PS you would need to go to Image>>Mode then select 8 bit. Now go to "Save As" then in the drop down box select Jpeg.

In such as Picasa I think you only get the Jpeg option

Load it into your favourite image editor and then resave in the new format.

Normally I do HIREZ jpeg in the camera, save as tiff whilst working on it and then resize and save to post in the interweb. For each batch of photos I have an original folder (jpeg), a work folder (tiff, ufo), and a completed folder (tiff, jpeg).
