hi everyone, i currently have 350d, the kit lens (which i find ok) and a chocolate sigma 70-30 DG macro, im looking to sell this and upgrade to a canon 70-300 is usm. my question is, is it worth the change of lens, is the canon really that much better? thanks in advance,
Horse

The Canon is sharper and you will find the IS a real boon as you are in effect handholding a 480mm lens. Love IS.

Make sure you don't get fooled by the slight lower price of the Canon 75-300 IS that is slightly slower but has a lot of more disadvantage compare to 70-300.
If you ask me, don't go for either. Instead wait till your budget is right for stepping into one of 4 sister 70-200mm (Whichever you can afford) that are a day and night difference in quality when compare to any other glass, including Canon's itself, for the given range. A lot of people have found the real photography after buying one of these L class lenses. You pay little more but you get what you want and more importantely, you don't have to pay twice or even more times...

Certainly do not buy the Canon 75-300 IS which is the 70-300 IS's predecessor and is not very good at all (soft). The 70-200 L lenses have a very high reputation, the best compromise being the 70-200 f4 IS version as the f2.8 is large and heavy in comparison. Not as long a focal length as the 70-300 of course but you could always put a 1.4 converter on one when funds permit. Me? I have the 70-300 DO IS and although it is controversial I love it.

well to be honest i dont think i"ll ever be buying L lens"s, though i"d love one, i have been looking at the 70-300 IS USM, for around £375. the price is still a bit steep for me, but to spend over £500 on a lens............hmmmmmm no doubt they are a lot better but for me its an interest and not a proffession.

Well the 70-300 IS you are looking at has a very high reputation and some people call it a ''hidden L lens'' as far as sharpness is concerned although not build quality. From what I have read you would be very happy with the results from this lens.
