Default WIA x TWAIN

Hi,

I have problem with film/slide scanner CanoScan FS4000US. I am not able to have it recognized by any system (OS X Leopard, Windows XP). Windows do now WIA instead of TWAIN. I tried to download lots of software from web, but no success. How to connect the scanner to Mac or Windows? Unfortunatelly for Mac i do not have Photshop, so if there is some other usable program which would be willing to scan .

OHHHH... how a headache I have from all day lost time....

Susan

Hi Susan, I had that problem years ago. Ever since I have used VueScan by Hamrick. Here is the LINK to their site - I have yet to find anything to beat it. Hope it helps.

I had a similar problem with my Canon scanner when I switched to Windows 7. Installing the latest driver for the scanner BEFORE plugging the scanner in to the computer fixed it for me, but it was a frustrating learning curve. I had to remove the scanner from WIA after it had tried to install itself via that route before the latest (TWAIN) driver would work.

Thanks Andy for your tip. I am going to try this software for free and see how it goes.(already I looked at their web). The only trouble is time... Actually I found another full box of slides... after I moved here from UK I am still lost in stuff.... and priorities. Spring unfortunatelly is for the garden (7 ha needs a bit of time) ...

Andy, one more question... do you use Mac or Windows... I bet Mac. So if I download the Vuescan software, I will need PhotoShop to import images from scanner or it works on its own, just scan and put them into folder or via iPhoto ( I am not too familiar with Leopard)? Because I have Photoshop for windows only, that's the last reason I am still fighting with PCs. Susan

Susan, I use a Mac. But Vuescan just works on either platform - I normally download to a desktop folder when using it - then import to Photoshop or wherever. If you are thinking about changing platforms - I think you may find Adobe charge an upgrade price to switch from Windows to Mac if you have a registered copy, and you keep your serial number. It's worth asking them.
