im looking at getting a cheap telephoto lens and saw this one on ebay
Sigma Zoom lens 70-300 f/4-5.6 DL will this work on my canon 400d???

Darren;
Sigma makes lenses for most Major camera manufacturer so it could be in any type of mount. You need to check for description of item better. If the seller is rookie enough not to mention it, then you may want to ask him by using ebay's email "Ask seller a question".
You need to ascertain that the lens is in EOS mount to fit your 400D/XTi.
BTW this is one of the sharpest lenses out there that you can buy for such an inexpensive price. The lens was formerly called "Quantaray" same excellent glass. Make sure you don't want to buy a Canon FD mount that is Canon's older mount, not fitting your body (Not sure but I believer older versions exist).

I bought the same lens not too long ago and am pleased enough with it. It is rather slow and does a lot of hunting in AF mode.
