Hi Dave, welcome to WPF - I think you will find that Photoshop is still the favourite, but there are many others out there, all of which have their fans.

Photoshop Elements 7 is very good value and does just about all you need it to unless you're a working pro.

PaintShop Pro 12 does a lot things that Photoshop Elements doesn't do, such as curves,Infra red simulation and more.

Still use Elements 6. I only do very basic stuff so it is more than enough for me.

I personally prefer Fireworks over Photoshop, i find it's features are easier to get to... But doesn't do a lot of things Photoshop does... Which is when i go and use Photoshop instead :P

Maybe when I get a better PC and an even better camera I might give photoshop a try....
At the moment I like to fiddle around with the excellent Picasa 3.0, it's free to download off the net. Matt

Give GIMP a try, again a free download, I'm still finding my way around it but it's not bad once you get used to it.

Being a novice, Not being to adept at using photshop. At the moment i use picasa as a kind of workflow. It is really good for organizing my photos and above all easy. Its also easy and quick to edit alot of images quickly as it has a smooth edit interface and a batch function. If i need to do stuff that picasa cant do, i open the image in elements 7, and do it there. Seems to work for me at the moment.

My PC is 6 years old XP machine with 2 mb RAM and handles Canon 7D files fine. As for a better camera is concerned a quick run through the basics in Elements makes a huge difference to the results from my 5 year old P&S camera onwards.
