To IS or not IS?

After seeing the posts of Scotland and Ireland and Britian and Iran, there has to be some trade off somehow, I guess I have more sun? It's been raining here for days and the forecast shows all of next week there is rain so maybe this IS thing will be of benefit yet?

Some people believe a stabilised lens will provide slightly softer results than a non stabilised lens. The lens and camera body are constantly moving one element to stabilise the image provided through the mirror box but...these people believe that this element may move during exposure to the detriment of the image sharpness. I have not tested this so cannot offer any comment.

I rate and use Nikon's VR system allowing me to shoot at lower shutter speeds to get propeller blur for my aviation shots. Although at times I turn off VR when shooting fast jets as there is a lag in panning so I have to catch-up with the jet then pan with it as I take the shot.

I have to state VR works very very well and I have been a supporter for four years. I cannot live without it but none of my lower focal length lenses have it - no real need.

Image stability is damn bloody good. This was taken full zoom (420mm) on the Panasonic FZ30, hand held 1/10 sec. I wouldn't even have attempted this without it.
